Methods for Measuring Impact

This Quarterly Members' event took place on the 5th of October 2022 and will focused on the topic of measuring impact, including thinking about the issue of attribution. We invited special guests to discuss:

  • What to measure

  • The different methods, which to choose and why

  • The challenges & limitations of the methods

Our first guest speaker was Ben Shaw, formerly of the Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus (CECAN), a £3m research centre hosted by the University of Surrey, whose aim is to transform the practice of policy evaluation in Nexus areas and to make it fit for a complex world.

Ben has particular research interests in the use of evidence in the policy system, the development of evaluation approaches for environmental policy interventions and the development of policies and actions intended to create child-friendly cities.

Our second guest speaker was Katharina Keck, the Senior Evaluation Manager at the Education Endowment Fund. Prior to this, she spent five years working at Oxford Policy Management in their social policy and education teams in South Africa and in the UK. She managed, designed, and implemented research studies and mixed-methods impact evaluations of large-scale education programmes that aim to address educational disadvantages in low- and middle-income countries.
